No one who loves hats can resist the wonderful tale of Philip Treacy, the Irish hatter. Born in County Galway to a large family (seven brothers and a sister), Treacy was taught to hold a sewing needle by his village school teacher. With the needle, he has gone on to free the hat from the dictums of fashions and trends, creating sculptures for the crown out of veils, feathers, artificial flowers, straw and gauze, as well as shadows and illusion. "I think and hope I have changed the way we look at hats," he reflects. "They are no longer symbols of conformity but highly individual acts of rebellion. I am constantly challenging the perception of what a hat should be and what role it should play."

Andare per mare è stato per molto tempo una scelta obbligata e, in alcuni casi, anche un'esperienza rischiosa, caratterizzata da disagi e privazioni, mentre oggi è una passione, un hobby, una moda e solo per pochissimi un vero e proprio lavoro. L'evoluzione dell'idea di viaggio da necessità a piacere ha comportato un cambiamento anche nella struttura e nella progettazione delle imbarcazioni. Fino a pochi decenni fa progettare, costruire e condurre un'imbarcazione era un'attività particolare, fatta di tecniche tramandate di generazione in generazione e sistemi avvolti da un certo mistero per chi abitava a terra. Nel secondo dopoguerra, con l'introduzione di nuove tecnologie e il boom economico, i cantieri passarono da un'impostazione artigianale a una industriale, sancendo la nascita della nautica di massa e favorendo la progettazione e la diffusione di barche idonee alla crociera e, soprattutto, all'ospitalità e alla residenza. Non sono quindi più solamente le prestazioni dell'imbarcazione a determinare modifiche e sviluppi nella progettazione, ma fattori quali l'economia dello spazio, l'abitabilità interna e la piacevolezza degli ambienti di bordo. Proprio di questi fattori si occupa il volume, uno strumento didattico chiaro e sintetico sulla progettazione di interni dello yacht a motore, ma anche un testo per marinai professionisti e della domenica, per i pionieri del diporto, i progettisti, i costruttori e "tutti quelli che prima o poi sono caduti in mare in porto o in navigazione".
