Huile sur panneau. Le tableau est une copie révisée de la célèbre œuvre de David Teniers le Jeune (1610-1690), exécutée entre 1634 et 1640 et actuellement conservée au musée du Prado à Madrid. Le titre de la scène animée fait référence à la soi-disant Nuit des Rois, une célébration correspondant à l'Épiphanie, précisément douze jours après Noël, qui était la dernière nuit de célébrations, au cours de laquelle on pouvait boire au-delà de ses limites, se consacrer à l'amour, à l'échange de partenaires et de genres, une sorte de carnaval, au cours duquel le Roi du Désordre était élu (littéralement le roi du Désordre), un souverain à l'envers qui imposait ses lois, subvertissant les règles et les comportements. Cette œuvre, comme beaucoup d'autres de Teniers, connut un tel succès lié aux nombreuses commandes des rois et des aristocrates au cours du XVIIIe siècle, qu'elle induisit une importante production posthume de copistes, dont beaucoup signèrent même du nom de l'artiste. Le tableau présenté ici présente plusieurs manques de peinture, à combler. Il est dans un cadre de la fin du XIXe siècle, adapté à la taille.
