Based around the story of the extraordinary cabinetmaker Gabriele Capello, known as "Moncalvo" after the village where he was born, this book examines the history of the art of woodworking in nineteenth-century Turin. It is set against a background of industrial change and the artistic and cultural upheaval of the Risorgimento and the Unification of Italy. At the court of Charles Albert,Capello brought to life most of the designs of Pelagio Pelagi, and yet he was well aware that craftsmens workshops needed to give way to factories - and indeed, at the height of his career, he had a factory in the Vanchiglia district with 130 employees. Here, as well as manufacturing furniture for royal commissions and countless private clients, he also fitted out many railway carriages, including a royal train for Victor Emmanuel II. Capello s fascinating life story is followed by a detailed reconstruction of his work as a furniture maker, the result of a meticulous two-year study of the archives. Text in Italian. 209 colour & 14 b/w illustrations
