È stata spesso discussa in filosofia l'ipotesi secondo cui il mondo esterno non sarebbe che finzione, apparenza del tutto priva della realtà che le attribuiamo. L'utilità di tale ipotesi sta nel sollecitare strategie per il suo superamento. Ritenere che sia vera oppure falsa ha dirette conseguenze sul nostro modo di concepire il mondo e la conoscenza che se ne può avere: sposare un realismo di stampo "forte" che allontana il mondo dalle facoltà intellettive umane, conducendo a una forma di scetticismo radicale, o preferire un realismo più "debole" in grado di garantire una conoscenza autentica. La seconda prospettiva viene privilegiata in questo libro, dove l'ipotesi scettica risulta non solo falsa, ma addirittura assurda.
