Surrealism is a survey of the twentieth century's longest lasting and, arguably, most influential art movement. Championed and held together by André Breton for over forty years, Surrealism was France's major avant-garde artistic tendency from 1924 onwards, rapidly spreading around the globe to become an international phenomenon. During World War II, Surrealism's exiled artists and writers had a major impact on American art and were a primary influence for the Abstract Expressionist generation. The official Surrealist movement continued to the end of Breton's life in 1966, and its legacy is still pervasive today, in contemporary art as well as in numerous quotations from surrealist imagery in cinema, advertising and the media.



Survey Mary Ann Caws - a distinguished scholar, translator and associate of the surrealists - describes in clear, perceptive and lively prose the essential characteristics that define Surrealism, as well as tracing a concise path through the chronology of this prolific and wide-ranging movement. The text also demonstrates how Surrealist art and writing are interdependent.

Il ciclo pittorico dedicato a Jackson Pollock qui documentato nasce da un reperto bibliografico: la sezione "Une vie, éléments et documents", biografia commentata e illustrata del grande pittore americano, così come appare nel catalogo Jackson Pollock del Musée national d'art moderne di Parigi del 1982. In questo suo libro d'artista Gabriele Di Matteo sottopone le oltre settanta illustrazioni di quel precedente catalogo a un processo di riproduzione: le fotografie che ritraggono Pollock nei diversi momenti della sua vita sono state tradotte in pittura e trasformate in quadri. Un atto questo che si ferma all'esatto limite oltre il quale si identificherebbe con la produzione di copie. Tutti i documenti invece (lettere, dattiloscritti, inviti e altro), alcuni riscritti a mano, sono stati rifotografati e ingranditi. Resta fuori da questo processo di traduzione la pittura di Pollock. Così, le vedute delle mostre, delle sale o dei saloni espositivi che hanno ospitato i famosi dripping e le altre opere di Pollock ci presentano solo quadri bianchi. Spogliando l'artista dell'immagine che ci ha lasciato, restano da una parte la pittura e tutto quello che ha di incommensurabile con qualsiasi dinamica attuale, dall'altra la sua vita e l'impossibilità con cui essa si è scontrata.
