In occasione della prima partecipazione della Santa Sede alla Biennale Architettura, per la 16. Mostra internazionale di architettura della Biennale di Venezia (26 maggio - 25 novembre 2018), Electaarchitettura pubblica il catalogo del Padiglione della Santa Sede "Vatican chapels", allestito sull'isola di San Giorgio Maggiore. Il progetto, curato da Francesco Dal Co, si ispira alla Skogskapellet, la Cappella nel bosco che il celebre architetto Erik Gunnar Asplund costruì a partire dal 1918 nel Cimitero di Stoccolma. A questo piccolo ma eloquentissimo capolavoro è dedicato uno spazio espositivo in apertura del percorso dove sono esposti il plastico - realizzato per l'occasione - e le riproduzioni dei disegni originali. Il tema di una cappella come luogo di orientamento, incontro, mediazione e saluto - come la definì Gunnar Asplund - è stato proposto a dieci architetti, di diversa provenienza e portatori delle esperienze più differenti, invitati a ideare e costruire altrettante cappelle all'interno dell'area alberata all'estremità dell'isola veneziana di San Giorgio Maggiore. Come la Skogskapellet di Asplund, anche le cappelle che formano il Padiglione della Santa Sede sono isolate e accolte da un ambiente naturale del tutto astratto, connotato unicamente dal suo emergere dalla laguna e dal suo aprirsi sull'acqua, ulteriore metafora del peregrinare della vita. "Vatican Chapels" è dunque un padiglione composito e diffuso, percorribile a tappe in un percorso che è, insieme una sorta di pellegrinaggio spirituale non solo religioso ma anche laico. Il catalogo a cura di Francesco Dal Co, con testi di Gianfranco Ravasi, Francesco Dal Co e Elisabetta Molteni, documenta nel dettaglio l'intero iter di ideazione e realizzazione del padiglione della Santa Sede. Schizzi inediti, elaborati di progetto, fotografie dei cantieri e delle cappelle concluse, oltre che una campagna fotografica di Alessandra Chemollo e Ginevra Formentini, permettono di ripercorrere le tappe di questo ambizioso progetto.

Soon after arriving in New York in the late 1950s, Frank Stella (born 1936) came to prominence with his striped Black Paintings and shaped canvases. His early painting project reduced the medium to its most fundamental elements and introduced a key concept of Minimalism at an early date: "What you see is what you see." But it was not long before Stella, a restlessly experimental worker, abandoned austerity for brighter colors, irregular shapes, rougher textures and gestural brushstrokes.

The Shoowa people, a small tribe from the kingdom of Kuba, now Zaire, have been designing and making embroidered textiles for hundreds of years. With their complex geometrical patterning and bold colours, these works of art were used in a variety of ways by the Shoowas, as status symbols, dowries, shrouds, religious vestments or as a type of currency. Genuine production ceased around 1905, with the result that they have become collectors' items.
