Nel corso del Novecento nessun genere letterario o cinematografico ha tanto influito sulla costruzione dell'identità quanto il western; senza troppo esagerare si può sostenere che il vero modello maschile del secolo scorso sia stato John Wayne. Bastano pochi "ingredienti" - la via centrale di una cittadina del West, due uomini che si affrontano, pistole e cinturone, speroni e cappello, sullo sfondo cavalli e donne - e chiunque, dappertutto, capisce di che si tratta. Anche se oggi il western non appare più così centrale come negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, si tratta pur sempre di un genere che continua a ripresentarsi in forme sia esplicite sia nascoste o "revisioniste", nella letteratura e nel cinema, nei fumetti e nelle serie televisive, o addirittura nella retorica dei presidenti e dei politici americani. Gli autori di questo volume si interrogano sulle sue articolazioni dal Novecento a oggi e lo fanno da prospettive molto diverse: la rilettura critica del mito della Frontiera, l'analisi culturale dei testi letterari, lo studio della nozione di paesaggio e del legame tra geopolitica e mito del West. Non mancano interventi sullo specifico filmico del western "classico", su alcuni motivi e temi tipici, nonché su quel cinema contemporaneo che ne riprende alcuni tratti evidenti, pur appartenendo ad altri generi (guerra, fantascienza, awentura).
