Movies are unquestionably one of the cutting-edge media in 20th-century artistic production, a discipline that has contributed more than any other to fashioning the visual culture of our contemporaries and of the artists of our day and age. The Center Pompidou continues its policy of publicizing trail-blazing references to cinematographic culture by presenting the exhibition Hitchcock and Art which first went on show in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and whose Paris debut is marked by an adaptation and some significant additions, primarily by the arrival of works from the collections held in the Musee' National d'Art Moderne. Keeping faith with the Centre's multidisciplinary vocation of exploring and valorizing relationships between the different fields of modern and contemporary artistic creation, the exhibition aims at establishing a dialogue and revealing correlations between a leading, complex and universally known opus of cinematography work on the one hand and artistic movements on the other, from Romanticism to Surrealism, as well as architecture or graphic design, which left such a profound mark as they nourished Alfred Hitchcock's imagery and aesthetic. Hitchcock and Art provides the Centre with a chance to offer the public not only the exhibition, but also Hitchcock's complete repertoire of films.

Ten short films, each based on a broken commandment, set in and around an apartment block in Warsaw. The stories are simple, describing experiences and emotions common to us all - the fractured quality of modern family life, its sadnesses and hopes. These brilliant films explore the significance of the choices we all make, every day of our lives. This edition includes an introduction by Kieslowski about his work, together with the feature-length scripts for A Short Film about Killing and A Short Film about Love.

Rashomon is one of the greatest of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's films, the winner of the 1951 Venice Festival prize and the Academy Award for best foreign film in 1952. It features Toshiru Mifune, the best-known Japanese actor in the West, as the bandit, and accused rapist and murderer. At the beginning of the film, a woodcutter, priest, and commoner happen to meet at the ruined gate--Rashomon--outside the city of Kyoto. This tale of rape and murder is first seen through the eyes of the woodcutter and priest, both of whom have been touched by the events. The cynical, detached commoner, "everyman," listens to and comments upon their stories. The central section of the film, a series of flashbacks and tales within tales, consists of the same events retold by the husband (speaking through a medium, from the grave), the wife, the bandit, and the woodcutter. Each tells what happened--or possibly, what should have happened. The film deals with multiple truths; Richie summarized the director's point of view in the introduction: "the world is illusion, you yourself make reality, but this reality undoes you if you submit to being limited by what you have made." The sixth title in the Rutgers Films in Print Series and the first Japanese film, this volume brings together for the first time the full continuity script of Rashomon; an introductory essay by Donald Richie; the Akutagawa stories upon which the film is based; critical review and commentaries of the film; a filmography; and a bibliography. Donald Richie is the author of the definitive books in English on Kurosawa and Ozu. In addition, he is coauthor of the standard English-language history of the Japanese film and author or editor of several other books on the subject. He has also served as film critic for the Japan Times and as curator of film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The story told in this book, which analyzes the presence of Italians in California in the early decades of the twentieth century and the influence they exerted in various sectors (from architecture to art, from crafts to the burgeoning film industry), began in 1915, the year Salvatore Ferragamo arrived in the United States and soon after moved to the sunny West Coast. That same year the Panama-Pacific International Exposition opened in San Francisco, where Marcello Piacentini's Italian Citadel made waves and marked the beginning of the powerful and lasting influence of the Renaissance style on the local architectural language.Against the backdrop of Italian emigration to the States - the fil rouge running through the entire book - and of a Hollywood on its way to becoming the world capital of the young film industry, the volume tells of personalities who were already myths in their day, such as Enrico Caruso, Rudolph Valentino, Lina Cavalieri, and Tina Modotti; cinematic milestones like Cabiria , Ben-Hur , and Romola ; the star system and iconic directors; the important part played by Italian musicians in the birth of jazz; and the thousands of Italians who worked "behind the scenes," making a vital contribution to the creation of the Hollywood myth. This complex story, told both in words and in images, paints a varied and multifaceted picture of the "set" on which the Shoemaker of Dreams began his thrilling creative adventure in America.

"Maschere nude" è il titolo che Pirandello stesso ha scelto per la raccolta dei propri testi teatrali: un ossimoro, immagine di un teatro nel quale l'uomo che si è dato (o al quale è stata imposta) una "maschera" ne scopre la nudità. Questo volume propone drammi come: Diana e la Tuda, L'amica delle mogli, La nuova colonia.
