Country Scene with Figures

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. The scene depicts a group of peasants, both men and women, gathering baskets of flowers, making music and dancing to the sound of bagpipes and tambourines, with some taking the opportunity to flirt. It is therefore a popular country festival, a favorite subject of Barucci, a Roman painter who primarily depicted daily life in the countryside. His almost all-encompassing love for nature—the most authentic, barren, and realistic aspects of the Roman countryside and suburbs—led him to become one of the leading exponents of the rustic style. The brightness and vividness of the colors enhance the festive feel of the scene, underscoring the carefree, serene atmosphere of this moment of folk life. The work is presented in a period frame.

Louis Philippe oval table. Walnut and crotchet veneer, drop-leaf top inlaid with floral and leaf motifs and a mirror behind it, interior with open compartments and closed compartments in mahogany and poplar. Slender legs, carved with scrolls and flowers, are ebonized, as is the apron that serves as a pull for the drawer under the top. Italy, mid-19th century.

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. Milanese painter Robaldo Casalini Baldelli established himself as an Impressionist landscape painter, creating works in which figures and elements blend into one another in a play of light and shadow. Framed.

Gesù e un uomo raggiungono la riva di un fiume e si siedono a mangiare. Consumano due dei tre pani che hanno. Gesù si alza, va a bere al fiume, torna e, non trovando la pagnotta, chiede all'altro chi l'abbia presa. "Non so", risponde. Ripartiti, Gesù vede una gazzella con due piccoli, ne chiama a sé uno, lo uccide, ne arrostisce una parte e ne mangiano. Poi dice al piccolo di gazzella: "Con il consenso di Dio, alzati!", e quello si alza e se ne va. Allora si rivolge all'uomo: "Per Colui che ti ha mostrato questo prodigio, ti chiedo: chi ha preso la pagnotta?"; e quello risponde: "Non lo so". Giunti a un corso d'acqua, Gesù prende l'uomo per mano e i due camminano sull'acqua. Gesù domanda: "Per Colui che ti ha mostrato questo prodigio, ti chiedo: chi ha preso la pagnotta?". L'altro risponde di nuovo: "Non lo so". Arrivati in un deserto, Gesù prende a raccogliere della sabbia: "Con il consenso di Dio, diventa oro", dice, e così accade. Gesù lo divide in tre parti: "Un terzo a me, uno a te e uno a chi ha preso la pagnotta". Quello replica: "L'ho presa io!". E Gesù: "Allora è tutto per te!". È una delle tante storie incantevoli che fanno parte del vero e proprio "vangelo musulmano" contenuto in questo libro: e prosegue poi verso una conclusione sorprendente. Riletture plurisecolari del Gesù dei Vangeli e degli apocrifi, esse ci restituiscono un Gesù musulmano, o un Gesù che parla all'islam, e a noi: "Beato colui che guarda con il cuore, ma il suo cuore non è in ciò che vede".
