ARARPI0108766
Oil on Canvas D. Teniers Attr. XVIII Century

Feast day in the Village

Oil on canvas. On the back of the painting there are some labels: one from an English market (probably an auction from the early 1900s) bearing the title; a second from a Milanese gallery in via Montenapoleone (from the 1930s) and finally a label from an important private collection. The scene proposes a moment of celebration in a Nordic village: in the center of the street men and women dance and chat, while others sit at tables drinking and playing, children and animals chase each other around; the atmosphere is lively and cheerful. The pictorial style and the methods of execution are compatible with the production of David Teniers III (son of David Teniers II the Younger), a Flemish painter who in his production includes various scenes of festivity and village life. Restored and relined at the end of the 19th century, with a frame from the same period.

The Rape of Proserpina Antique Sculpture Terracotta XIX Century

Italy, XIX Century

Glazed terracotta sculpture depicting "The Rape of Proserpina". The composition reproduces, on a smaller scale, Gian Lorenzo Bernini's famous marble work from 1622. In the 18th and 19th centuries, several sculptors drew inspiration from this model, reproducing it in various versions and materials: porcelain, biscuit, and bronze. Our group, faithful to the original model, depicts Pluto in the act of abducting Proserpina. Standing guard is the three-headed Cerberus dog. The sculpture has imperfections, but these flaws do not detract from its sculptural strength and aesthetic appeal.

Antique Painting Saint Joachim and the Angel Oil on Canvas XVI Century

ARARPI0296312
Antique Painting Saint Joachim and the Angel Oil on Canvas XVI Century

Oil on canvas. Lombard school, late 16th century. In the large scene, an angel is depicted in the foreground announcing to Joachim, as he grazes his sheep, the impending birth of his daughter; in the background, Joachim meets and embraces his wife Anna, who is awaiting him at the gates of a city: according to tradition, the two spouses, considered sterile, after both receiving a visit from an angel, meet at the Golden Gate (of Jerusalem), symbolizing the beginning of salvation through the conception of Mary, the future mother of Jesus. The profile of the city in the background points to Cremona, probably the city of the patron of the work, where Giovan Battista Trotti, known as Malosso (1555-1619), a Mannerist painter, lived and worked, to whom the work is accustomed in style, allowing us to hypothesize an attribution to him or his workshop. The work, previously relined, shows slight loss of color. It is presented with a frame.

The carved and painted wood sculpture depicts the allegory of Wisdom as a young woman standing above a low parallelepiped; she wears a long, plastic tunic fastened at the waist by a knotted belt and a drape that falls over her shoulders. Between the torso and the left arm he holds a large closed volume, while in the opposite hand he holds a lighted torch above his head. The face is turned upwards, the hair gathered in a bun above the nape, from which a flowing lock escapes.

Antique Painting Saint Jerome Oil on Canvas Italy XVII Century

ARARPI0297334
Antique Painting Saint Jerome Oil on Canvas Italy XVII Century

Oil on canvas. The large canvas is almost entirely occupied by the figure of the saint, who, seated on a rock in a sparsely furnished outdoor setting, is intent on meditation. The saint is accompanied by his traditional iconographic symbols: the book, or rather, the Vulgate, according to tradition, of considerable size to underscore its importance; the lion, an animal from which the saint removed a thorn in the desert, rendering it docile and faithful, and which has become a symbol of tamed passions. The saint holds a stone in his right hand with which he beats his chest, as a sign of penance, and is partially wrapped in a red and white robe, the cardinal's robe, which, however, falls from his shoulders, a sign of his abandonment of office. The pictorial style is close to the style of Johann Carl Loth (1638-1698), a German painter active primarily in Italy, who depicted the saint several times, always with great attention to the sacred book and who had contact with Caravaggio and his painting. The figure presented here emerges powerfully from the dark, barely visible background, highlighting the man's muscles and features. This is achieved with powerful effects of light and shadow and with the predominant use of the color red, in the robe but also in the nuances of the flesh and the animal's fur, evoking the saint's passion and inner strength. The painting, already restored and relined in the past, is presented in an antique, regilded frame.

Antique Painting Signed Girolamo Forabosco Jefte and His Daughter

Jefte and His Daughter

Oil on canvas. The painting depicts Jephthah and his daughter, two biblical characters from the Old Testament. The girl is depicted in profile, dressed in the attire of a 17th-century Venetian lady: a low-cut dress, cinched at the waist with a golden belt and flowing sleeves; her blond hair is gathered and braided with strings of pearls; and dangling earrings adorn her ears. With one hand, she raises a cloth to her face to dry her tears, while with the other, she holds her father's hand. Jephthah, on the other hand, wears armor, a heavy red cloak draped over his right arm, and seems to be pointing out of the painting; his expression is one of pain. The feelings expressed by the protagonists—desperation bordering on madness in the character in question, meek resignation in the weeping girl, who holds the man's hand as if to console him—well illustrate the tragic story of the warrior returned victorious but forced by a vow to sacrifice his own daughter. According to the analysis of art historian Dr. Ludovica Trezzani, whose expert opinion is attached, the painting under examination here is a replica, varied in size and slightly closer framing, of a composition by Girolamo Forabosco, also known as "Medoro and Angelica"because the painting's subject has always been sought within the context of Ariosto's poem. Dr. Trezzani retraces in her analysis the sequence of hypotheses that led to the work's interpretation of the Old Testament subject. The expert defines the painting as "precious in its materiality and skillful in many passages but not so successful in others, and therefore probably executed in Forabosco's workshop, partly with his direct intervention but with the extensive responsibility of one or more assistants, as was the practice in workshops of the time". The painting shows signs of previous restoration and relining. It is presented in a frame.

Antique Chest of Drawers Neoclassical 3 Drawers Italy XVIII Century

Italy, Late XVIII Century

Neoclassical chest of drawers, late 18th century. Made of walnut, it features three drawers on the front, one lower under the top and two adjacent ones with a concealed chain that allows for the continuity of the inlaid scene; truncated pyramid feet. The entire surface is veneered in quadripartite bois de rose with inlaid candelabras on the uprights, a band under the top with inlaid reserves with facing putti riding dolphins with tails that develop into leafy scrolls. The central reserve on the front depicts the scene of Hercules killing the lion, with his club resting at his feet. On the sides are two allegorical figures: a vestal virgin with a lamb and an old man with a staff and a sword girded at his side. Walnut interior, marble top replaced. This piece is part of the corpus of furnishings identified as the "dei fondi verdi" workshop. The two figures on the sides correspond to the secretaire published in the book "Maggiolini & co." and similar correspondences on the production's furnishings can be found in the architectural composition of the chest of drawers and in the repeated frames.
