History of the Bench

 

The Wooden Bench is simply a piece of furniture that allows people to rest or sit, and thanks to its elongated shape, it offers multiple seats.
We can find a Bench with Backrest or a Backless Bench, a Church Bench, a Kindergarten Bench, or a home bench.
During the Middle Ages, the Solid Wood Bench was the only seating available alongside the Stool, serving both as a seat and a table.
Over time, it evolved into a bench-storage chest, often with a backrest and armrests, usually made as an alternative to traditional Wooden Benches.
Chairs and armchairs were only introduced during the Renaissance.
Before the 16th century, there were no benches or Chairs in churches, and wealthy worshippers would bring their own cushions to kneel on—so as not to suffer from standing or kneeling directly on stone slabs.
