Clock Definition
In everyday use, we recognize the clock as an object that allows us to know the time and measure its passing.
It’s a mechanism made of a motor that manages energy and displays time.
Over time, we moved from the creation of pendulum clocks to table clocks, and then to wristwatches.
History of the Clock
Owning an antique clock has always symbolized the ability to control time — a precious item to be treasured.
The first production of antique table clocks dates back to the 1500s, with different designs depending on the social class.
The first device resembling an antique clock was the sundial, discovered in the 3rd millennium BC.
The flaw of the sundial was that it didn’t work at night, only measuring time from sunrise to sunset.
That’s why alternative unique table clocks were developed, such as water hourglasses, water clocks, and mechanical clocks, which were later installed in the bell towers of major cities.
In the 18th century, the first spring-driven clock was created, used on ships to calculate longitude.
What types of antique clocks exist?
Grandfather Clock: very tall and usually made of wood, they date back to around the 1700s and were typically placed in hallways.
Mantel Clock: small in size, they could be simply geometric or decorated with intricate details.
Pocket Watch: created around the 1800s, they often included indicators for the day, month, moon phases, and times for sunrise and sunset.
