Italy, 1960s

A polychrome glazed ceramic vase signed under the base by Elio Schiavon, the renowned Italian ceramist. The vase features the typical geometric shape of a flattened parallelepiped and the famous motif of stylized cities and towers, one of the most iconic and sought-after themes of his artistic production in the 1960s. The work expresses the mid-century modernist language typical of the Veneto region. Schiavon combines glossy polychrome glaze with graffiti or incised details, creating an abstract and vibrant skyline composed of spires, pointed roofs, and windows. The work features intense chromatic accents, with strong contrasts between the dark background, the warm tones of burnt orange, yellow ochre, and the silvery-gray hues of the towers.

France, Haute-Marne. Manufacturer's mark under the base in underglaze blue, attributable to the Aprey factory. A factory founded in 1780 in Haute-Marne, France, produced highly decorative majolica, often inspired by other European manufacturers. The AP monogram under our vase and the presence of the letter J (Jarry, a well-known decorator at this factory) date the piece to the early decades of the 19th century. The factory closed around 1840.
