Antique Plates Meissen Porcelain Zwiebelmuster Germany XX Century

Germany, XX Century

A set of four Meissen porcelain plates with the "onion pattern". The "Zwiebelmuster" or "Onion Blue" commonly known to us as the "Onion Pattern" has become a symbol of the Meissen Manufactory over the centuries. It is painted in cobalt blue underglaze and depicts highly stylized flowers, trees, and fruit. The oldest piece made in Meissen with this pattern, inspired by a Chinese design from the Kangxi period, dates to 1739 and was painted directly by Hoeroldt. It features stylized peonies, Japanese peaches, asters, and pomegranates sinuously arranged around a bamboo stalk. Each of these elements has a specific meaning in Eastern symbolism. They represent: longevity (the bamboo), good fortune (the peony), cheerfulness (the aster), immortality (the peach), and fertility (the pomegranate).

What is ceramics?

Ceramics, in its simplicity, is terracotta carefully crafted, fired (as the word itself suggests), and decorated.
In fact, the color detail is what distinguishes simple terracotta from ceramics.
The term ceramics refers to all ancient figurines, ceramic decorations, decorative plates, white ceramic ornaments, and all those objects that fall under home decor.
Ceramic decorations are not only practical but also have an aesthetic value to uphold.

Ancient ceramics

In ancient times, many archaeological finds tell of myths of Greek and Roman deities, as well as amphorae that recount the story of the deceased within the family context.
Ceramic objects evolved over the years until the first industries were formed, transforming the production of ceramics from manual to mechanical.
Ceramic items follow the current of art, respecting and reviving the ornamental aspects rooted in tradition.
We can divide ceramic object production into different categories: from pure terracotta we get faience (a term used to define white ceramics or colored ceramics).
With advancing technologies, it has been discovered that ceramics, as a material, is useful in both the chemical and electronic industries.
