Che utilità ha oggi la filosofia e qual è la "specialità" del filosofo nell'epoca della settorializzazione dei saperi? Consapevoli dell'impossibilità di preservare la supremazia della "philosophia prima" in quanto conoscenza del Tutto, negli ultimi due secoli i filosofi occidentali si sono trovati spesso nella condizione di dover giustificare la propria funzione, alleandosi ora con la politica, ora con la storia, ora con la scienza. Tutti questi tentativi sono naufragati di fronte all'incapacità di disciplinare gli eccessi della ragione. Congedate le tentazioni autarchiche, a volte persino imperialiste, e i vari sforzi di mettervi freno, è venuto il momento di riconoscere che l'utilità del pensiero filosofico sta forse proprio nella sua natura eccedente, nel connubio tra l'aspirazione metafisica alla totalità e l'apertura scettica alla complessità dell'esperienza, nel desiderio sconfinato di espansione e inclusione, nell'esigenza di conciliare sintesi e apertura alla varietà dell'esistente. Più che di utilità sarebbe allora opportuno parlare di urgenza della filosofia, in quanto forma di curiosità onnivora, desiderio di sentirsi a casa ovunque, caotica creatività intellettuale. Per saggiare la desiderabilità degli eccessi della ragione si riflette in altrettanti capitoli del libro su dieci questioni centrali non solo della filosofia, ma dell'esistenza.

Italy, Late XVIII - Early XIX Century

Two-door wardrobe in the Directoire style of the late 18th century; four truncated pyramid feet support the piece of furniture constructed with sides and doors made with a frame with three panels each; the contemporary hardware is made of wrought iron and has two locks on the door. The piece of furniture is lacquered in beige tones.

Extendable Table

Large walnut table with six turned support legs. The smaller bands contain a drawer and the entire band can be pulled out with the legs, providing space for extensions for the top. The top is made with two walnut planks held in a frame. Feet replaced and extension tops missing. This is a table that, once rearranged, furnishes a large room and can accommodate a large number of friends.

The Shawl Portrait of a Mexican Woman ca. 1950

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. The French painter ORAZI stayed in Mexico in 1955 and then in 1956-57, which was an exceptionally attractive world for intellectuals and artists of the time. The natural scenery, the customs and traditions of the local population were the themes that converged in the series of paintings called Peintures sur le Mexique, landscapes, compositions and portraits without giving in to the taste for the exotic, with an extremely careful work on the color to represent, without descriptivism, the elements of nature and the figures of men and women, already projected towards abstraction. This pictorial series, composed of 35 pieces, was then exhibited in 1957, upon his return to France, at the Vendôme Gallery in Paris. The painting comes from the private collection of the artist's family.

Balloon-shaped chandelier in metal and sheet metal worked in repoussé and gilded. Sheet metal decorations that hint at the future Liberty style. Fourteen lights arranged in pairs, glass pendants and necklaces. Italy, last quarter of the 19th century.

Italy, Early XIX Century

Empire chest of drawers, early 19th century, Lombardy. With a characteristic shape, four rectangular plinths support the piece of furniture with two full columns on the pilaster strips to support the entablature under the top in which a drawer is inserted, on the front between the columns there are three more drawers. Built in walnut and poplar, it is then covered with a walnut slab and walnut pedulle, gilded bronze capitals and embellished with brass-plated frames as is customary in Lombardy. Missing parts

Round Table with Marble Top

Round table made in the George IV style, four lightning-shaped feet connect to a central baluster turned and carved, which supports a round top in which a macchia vecchia marble is inserted. Brass shoes cover the feet.
