Nel grande romanzo dell'emigrazione, per secoli risorsa primaria di tante vallate alpine, pagine molto dolorose sono state scritte dagli spazzacamini, il cui fenomeno ha caratterizzato le più povere di queste terre, dove la maggior parte delle famiglie si sono viste costrette, fino alle soglie degli anni Cinquanta, ad "affittare" nei mesi invernali uno o più figli ai "padroni". Questi, vecchi spazzacamini senza scrupoli, il più delle volte crudeli e inumani, se li portavano al seguito per le pianure nebbiose del Piemonte e della Lombardia, sottoponendoli a uno sfruttamento che non ha avuto uguali nel mondo del lavoro minorile delle nostre Alpi.

Interior with Female Figure

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. In a soberly furnished room, an elderly woman sits reading, or perhaps meditating, with her book resting on the table under the window, while her dog sleeps curled up on a bench to the right of the woman. The scene is rich in finely depicted details; from the window, with the curtains raised to let in the light that illuminates the scene, we can glimpse figures walking on a road that leads to a fortified palace. The German painter August Friedrich Siegert established himself mainly for his portraits and genre scenes that represent moments of daily life with great attention to detail and a touch of realism. The painting is presented in a contemporary gilded frame from the second half of the 19th century.

Carved Oak Fireplace Frame

Fireplace surround and mirror in carved oak according to the neo-Renaissance taste in vogue between the 19th and 20th centuries. Two columns with carved lion protomes support the fireplace shelf on which the mirror rests. The mirror is also carved with twin columns on the pilaster strips and the carved face of a monkey on the cymatium.

Free-standing mantelpiece, second half of the 19th century, of eclectic taste, this mirror is made up of a single frame with carved moulding and a shaped cymatium.

Cabinet with hinged doors and central drawers, lacquered wood.

Oil on canvas. The painting, restored and relined, has a small hole in the upper left. It is presented in a period frame from the early 1900s.

Italy, Late XVIII - Early XIX Century

Directoire period walnut secretary, truncated pyramidal feet, two doors at the base surmounted by a drop-leaf door concealing a cabinet composed of an open compartment and nine drawers; drawer in the band under the top. Missing parts and replacements.

England, Late XIX Century

This elegant cabinet with drawers on both sides reveals itself as a writing desk. Made of carved walnut in Tudor style, it was made at the end of the 19th century in England. The top has a "Moroccan" leather covering that we find in the pull-out drawer on the front, on the two sides there are three drawers on each side. The entire surface is carved in low relief as is typical in the Tudor style. Like all English furniture, this piece of furniture is extremely practical and functional as well as pleasant to insert even in a modern decor.
