I paesi che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo conobbero la loro massima coesione politica sotto l'impero romano, le cui terre gravitavano attorno al fulcro costituito dal Mare Nostrum. Il volume I romani e il Mediterraneo ci invita a compiere un viaggio tra le diverse sponde di questo mare: ci descrive le caratteristiche delle imbarcazioni mercantili e delle navi militari; tratteggia le caratteristiche della navigazione di un tempo soffermandosi sui tempi della navigazione, le condizioni della vita a bordo, i pericoli più temuti dai marinai; delinea le rotte commerciali dei beni di primaria necessità, dei prodotti di lusso e delle opere d'arte, ricostruendo così la vita economica dei primi secoli dell'era cristiana. Questo vivace e appassionante affresco del mondo romano è ulteriormente valorizzato da un ricco corredo di tavole acquerellate realizzato appositamente per l'opera, in cui sono riprodotte le caratteristiche salienti delle imbarcazioni, le loro manovre e le principali città portuali.

Relief Painting, 1958-1968

On the back there is a label from a Parisian art transport service, with the artist's name: ORAZI's works participated in numerous exhibitions in the French capital, both personal and collective. From 1958 to 1968 ORAZI, who had already moved from the figurative to the abstract phase, dedicated himself to creating compositions in relief: he collected and used materials and fibres of different types, especially natural materials and fibres such as tiny grains of sand, seeds, plant filaments and fragments of bark, with which he created relief shapes that emerge from the surface of the canvas. The basis of this artistic experience, called Peinture en Relief, is the exploration of nature, its components and phenomena (flowers, plants, sand, rocks, volcanic lava, coasts and seabeds, eruptions, storms, petrified meteorites). The works of this period were initially characterised by a still rather low relief; but subsequently the relief became more and more pronounced, often coming out of the perimeter of the support, to the point of appearing more like statues than paintings. Often in these works there is a reference to volcanic activity and the material it produces, sometimes expressed in titles such as "Lava Flow", "Volcanic Sands", Volcanic Beaches". The work is presented in a frame. Coming from the artist's family collection.

4 Mahogany Chairs

Four chairs from the first half of the 19th century, made of mahogany, have turned front legs with the front band of the seat partially carved, the backrest is open with a central carved folder like the upper one in which a compartment for the grip of the chairs is perforated. The model is derived from English chairs of the same period.

Art nouveau Cupboard in cherry wood richly carved with floral, leafy, fruit and sabre-like scrolls. Base with three doors surmounted by three drawers in the band under the top, upper part with pair of bevelled glass doors and open compartments. Italy, late 19th century.

Lovers, 1975 ca.

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. The painting belongs to ORAZI's production from the 1970s. In this phase the artist abandoned completely abstract and relief painting and returned to figurative painting, rendered however with simplified and distorted lines. In particular, he created the series called Lignes Circulaires and the one, to which this work belongs, of paintings called Têtes-Paysage, in which he created compositions that depict mysterious human heads or heads of fauns and mythological figures (sometimes accompanied by their insect companions), often couples of lovers kissing: the lines, in these paintings, intertwine to simultaneously form compositions, intertwining bodies, often in an erotic attitude. The work comes from the artist's family's private collection.

Nella storia delle Chiese cristiane il monachesimo è una istituzione fondamentale che ha come scopo la ricerca della perfezione attraverso la scelta, sigillata dai voti, di un particolare tipo di vita religiosa incentrato sulla sequela Christi. Nella loro storia millenaria, in guise peculiari, in Oriente e in Occidente, le varie forme della vita monastica, diventate per lo più di tipo cenobitico e in genere istituzionalizzate, si sono radicate nelle diverse civiltà, non soltanto dal punto di vista squisitamente religioso ma, più in generale, politico, economico e culturale. In Oriente, il monachesimo è riuscito a resistere nei secoli ai cambiamenti indotti da una storia tumultuosa, che ha messo spesso in discussione l'esistenza stessa delle varie Chiese. In Occidente, soprattutto nella sua forma benedettina, esso si è imposto nell'arco millenario del medioevo come una realtà sempre più centrale, capace di fronteggiare i cambiamenti più profondi, generando, da Cluny a Citeaux, nuove risposte religiose e organizzative, per non dire delle innumerevoli familiae monastiche nate dal tronco principale.

San Pier Damiani è arrivato a comprendere in profondità la bellezza della vita solitaria, e se ne è talmente innamorato che vorrebbe "trasformare il mondo cristiano in eremo", e vedere coloro che vanno alla ricerca di Dio, andare fino in fondo alla loro speranza. Questo spiega come mai Pier Damiani abbia scritto molto in lode alla vita solitaria, e l'abbia fatto mirabilmente, con grande competenza e con quella intelligenza del cuore che vede al di là delle forme e che indovina la presenza dello Spirito Santo. L'autore del volume è il padre domenicano Louis-Albert Lassus (1916-2003) profondo conoscitore e amante dell'eremitismo camaldolese, noto al pubblico italiano per i suoi scritti.
