This volume includes fifty-nine of Hopper's most important works in full color, as well as original works by thirteen renowned fiction writers and poets that pay homage to, or make reference to, the ways in which Hopper pictured our world. The contributors include Paul Auster, Anne Beattie, Tess Gallagher, Thom Gunn, John Hollander, William Kennedy, Galway Kinnell, Ann Lauterbach, Norman Mailer, Leonard Michaels, Walter Mosley, Grace Paley, and James Salter. Also featured is an essay by art historian Dr. Gail Levin.

Hopper's themes of alienation and loneliness, empty cityscapes and countrysides, the stark light of Cape Cod, silent hills and houses all have been indelibly imprinted on our collective sense of ourselves and our country. This work celebrates the impact Hopper's imagery continues to have on contemporary culture and is dedicated to a fuller understanding of Hopper's place in the American mind.

Egiziano di origine nubiana, Hassan è in Italia dal 1979, si è diplomata all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, vive e lavora tra Fano e Roma, ha al suo attivo numerose mostre ed ha partecipato alla Biennale di Venezia rappresentando l'Africa ad "Aperto 88". I suoi Santi neri, rivolti verso uno spazio senza tempo e senza rumori, fissano il nulla, esprimendo la sofferenza assoluta della cultura africana, profonda e altamente simbolica e solenni elefanti ornati di rosso sono esposti allo sguardo del mondo. Since 2003, the prestigious Views prize for young Polish art has been awarded in the Zacheta Gallery every other year. The award is accompanied by an exhibition in the prominent Zacheta Gallery, which helps to garner more international attention for the contemporary Polish art scene.Common Affairs presents a selection of current positions by artists who have won or were nominated for the Views Award in the past 15 years. The retrospective, which takes place in Berlin, intends to update the artistic practices of recent history. While this updating process accentuates the interesting phenomena and urgent problems that the artists have engaged with, it simultaneously examines the shifts and changes in the cultural landscape of Poland and abroad. Particular focus is placed on positions that address the history and politics of memory and representation, transformation and imminent transition.
