Description
As part of the complex redevelopment of the Imperial Forums commissioned by Mussolini, the construction of a large auditorium was planned. To participate in the competition held to present the project, Mario Palanti, a long-time acclaimed architect of eclectic style in Argentina and Paraguay, returned to Italy and worked on the new project for four years. Our book documents this lengthy process, presenting the various options considered and developing the two chosen: a theater "circular in shape with three tiers of galleries, with the orchestra and choir stage entirely located in the Great Hall, 50 meters in diameter, and seating for 7,000 people. The dome is 35 meters high"; and a "comb-shaped amphitheater, with the orchestra and choirs located toward the center of the hall, with a seating capacity of 8,000 people." The two projects are splendidly illustrated with 42 plates of plans, elevations, and plaster models, which also develop the rejected hypotheses and present us with true masterpieces of rationalist architecture. The competition was not followed up, and Palanti had his work published by Rizzoli on high-quality paper in 300 copies "not for sale, of a strictly private nature." Our copy bears number 59.
