Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. The English painter George Goodwin Kilburne specialized in genre scenes set in the life of the Victorian upper middle class, with hunting scenes, living room scenes, all characterized by elegance, by the meticulousness of details especially of the female figures. In 1875 Kilburne stayed a few months in Rome, and then traveled to other Italian and European cities. The scene depicted here, actually from 1875, seems to be set in Rome: at a guard post in the city, as the urban glimpse that can be seen from the open door clearly explains, some soldiers wearing the uniform of the Vatican guards are resting. The work is presented in a late 19th-early 20th century frame.

Additional Information

Artist: George Goodwin Kilburne (1839-1924)

Born in Hackford, Norfolk in 1834, George Goodwin Kilburne went to London at the age of 15 for a five-year apprenticeship as a wood engraver, developing from this craft the precision and detail that would enrich his later painting. He remained with the firm for another year before leaving to devote himself professionally to watercolour and oil painting, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after and well-known artists in England. Kilburne was a keen sportsman and equestrian, enjoying hunting, cycling and golf. He had a good collection of arms and armour, mainly swords, which often featured in his paintings. George's paintings often depicted the upper classes and ultra-fashionable female beauties in opulent settings of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His depiction of this beauty was accentuated by his attention to detail, from the clothing to the richly decorated interiors. Around 1875 Kilburne travelled extensively in Italy, painting in Rome for three months, as well as working in Venice during that period and also in 1876. He made many sketches in Normandy and Switzerland, as well as visiting many parts of England and Wales for the same purpose. Shortly after the death of Emperor Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie commissioned Kilburne to paint several pictures for her, often taking him to Chislehurst, Kent, to paint the rooms used by the late Emperor, which were preserved intact after his death. Towards the end of the 19th century, Kilburne designed and produced a large number of greetings and Christmas cards, and also contributed a large number of black and white pictures to illuminate important London magazines. A member of several important art societies, Kilburne exhibited at the Royal Academy and at numerous galleries in London and other British cities. Kilburne died in 1924. His work can be seen in numerous public and private galleries, including the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Sheffield Art Gallery.
