Description : Il giovane capraio
Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right "Fil. Palizzi 1852". The Neapolitan artist Filippo Palizzi, also known as "the painter of animals" is considered a revitalizer of 19th-century Neapolitan painting. Abandoning academic painting, following contemporary French experiences, Palizzi devoted himself to life studies, especially humble subjects, such as small landscapes and animal paintings, creating works of intense realism yet imbued with an intimate poetic tone. He stood out above all for his meticulous execution of the details of his subjects, a skill also evident in this small painting, where a young goatherd lies on the grassy mountainside while his goats graze. Herds with shepherds were a recurring subject in Palizzi's work: for example, the same subject can be seen in a canvas also dated 1852, sold at a Dorotheum auction in Vienna on 23/10/2014. The painting is on its first canvas and presented in an antique frame.

Additional Information
Artist: Filippo Palizzi (1818-1899)
Born in Vasto in 1818, Filippo Palizzi was an innovator in 19th-century Neapolitan painting. In Naples in 1837, he came into contact with the Posillipo school, which contributed to his abandoning academic painting. In 1855, on a study trip, he visited Holland, Belgium, and France; he returned to Paris in 1865 and 1875. Back in Naples, from 1878 to 1880, he directed the Academy of Fine Arts, returning to the same post in 1891. From 1880, he helped organize the schools of industrial art. Abandoning the academic style to devote himself to the study of reality, especially landscapes and animals, in keeping with contemporary French experiences, he turned his painting to humbler subjects (small landscapes and paintings of animals), harking back to the tradition of seventeenth-century Dutch animal painters, but with a more overt, nineteenth-century naturalism. Filippo Palizzi died in 1899.Age: 19th Century / 1801 - 1900

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
