Oil painting on canvas. The scene depicts the moment of St. Ambrose's life (Bishop of Milan) when - after the massacre of Thessalonica in 190 ordered by the Emperor Theodosius - he refused to celebrate the sacraments if the Emperor hadn't converted first. Theodosius acknowledged publicly the excess and during the night of Christmas, he was readmitted to the sacraments. Restored and relined, it is presented in revival frame. 17th century.
