Da Bisanzio, dove erano arrivate dopo un lungo viaggio, le icone si radicarono in tutte le regioni in cui erano presenti comunità ortodosse. Gli iconografi seppero flettere il proprio linguaggio nelle maniere più diverse, tenendo conto delle particolarità locali e degli influssi provenienti da altri mondi artistici. In seguito, anche le avanguardie pittoriche occidentali del '800 e del '900 scoprirono soprattutto nelle icone russe affinità con la propria ricerca di superamento del visibile.

Questo dizionario sull'arte contemporanea offre un'informazione storico-critica, sintetica ma esaustiva, sui principali movimenti e personalità artistiche dall'Impressionismo alle tendenze più recenti.
