Nato e cresciuto a Londra, nei primi anni Duemila Banksy è a Londra e comincia a farsi conoscere: in breve i muri della città si animano con i suoi personaggi ironici, pungenti, provocatori, irriverenti. È subito un fenomeno: la stampa parla di "Banksy effect". I suoi stencils, immediati e ricorrenti come manifesti pubblicitari, colpiscono al cuore: nel 2007 un sondaggio stabilisce che il suo lavoro rappresenta oramai un segno distintivo della città di Londra. La sua arte si manifesta come un'esplicita e aspra provocazione nei confronti dell'arroganza dell'establishment e del potere, del conformismo, della guerra, del consumismo. Ma chi è Banksy? Molte le congetture sul suo nome e la sua identità, ma ad oggi non si hanno altre certezze: tracciarne la biografia è impossibile, nonostante in molti abbiano tentato di farlo. La figura di Banksy è tuttora avvolta in un alone di mistero che si autoalimenta, definendo di fatto i tratti di un mito dei nostri tempi. La mostra e il catalogo ad essa affiancato raccontano l'origine del messaggio artistico dell'anonimo artista, proponendo una riflessione critica su quale sia e quale potrà essere la collocazione di Banksy nel contesto più generale della storia dell'arte.

Surrealism is a survey of the twentieth century's longest lasting and, arguably, most influential art movement. Championed and held together by André Breton for over forty years, Surrealism was France's major avant-garde artistic tendency from 1924 onwards, rapidly spreading around the globe to become an international phenomenon. During World War II, Surrealism's exiled artists and writers had a major impact on American art and were a primary influence for the Abstract Expressionist generation. The text also demonstrates how Surrealist art and writing are interdependent.



Works provides an extensive colour plate section with extended captions for every artwork. Following the movement from its beginnings in the 1920s up to the 40s and950s, its six sections trace the themes that predominated at different stages.
