Description

First edition of this rare work on Freemasonry, published anonymously in 1785 after the discovery and closure of the Union Masonic Lodge by the Senate of Venice. In his bibliographic study on Italian Freemasonry, Lattanzi describes this pamphlet as follows: "Anonymous book which, making fun of the Institution on the title page, dealt with it in the text, in a non-adverse way, according to the current custom of its detractors, almost as if favor public opinion, to unveil it from the wave of fearful hatred that had produced the theatricality of the event”. The work is divided into six chapters: 1 - Order and foundation of the Sect of Francs-Maçons and explanation of the allegory which includes their mysterious Moral. 2 - Different Order and Classes into which the Sect of Francs-Maçons is divided: Plan and description of the Lodge and way of receiving and enlisting Candidates or Novices. 3 – Sign, touch and word by which the Servite Brothers of the Lodge recognize each other; Their allegorical catechism with the explanation of the riddles….. 4 – Method of receiving the Francs-Maçons Garzoni in the Loggia; their obligations and catechism; promotion of these to the rank of Workers….. 5 - Ceremonies for the acceptance of Masters; allegories and their explanations…. 6 – Events and fatal vicissitudes that occurred at various times to the Sect of Freemasons. The text is accompanied by 6 engraved plates (out of the 7 originals: one plate is missing at the end of the volume): on the frontispiece two scenes set in a loggia with Latin mottos and 5 plates. at the end of the volume with Masonic symbols. Nice typographical brand on the title page.
