Il 24 marzo 1992 Vasilij Mitrokhin, archivista del KGB formalmente smantellato, si presenta all'ambasciata britannica di uno stato baltico. Le migliaia di documenti che porta con sé, ricopiati per anni e tenuti al sicuro, sono riscontrati come autentici dal controspionaggio inglese. Il governo di Sua Maestà affianca a Mitrokhin nel 1996 lo storico Christopher Andrew. Insieme, a partire da questo materiale, ricostruiscono così, dall'interno, la storia sconvolgente del KGB, dagli anni Trenta delle purghe staliniste alle "spie di Cambridge", dalle trame della Guerra fredda alla repressione del dissenso, dalle infiltrazioni tra i politici dei governi occidentali ai ricatti e alle ingerenze nella vita dei partiti comunisti e alle Brigate rosse.
