Description

The peculiar value of this volume lies in both its content and its presentation. The novel Les aventures du roi Pausole, the last bizarre novel with an erotic atmosphere published during his lifetime by the poet and novelist Pierre Louÿs, appears here in its first edition. The binding that contains the usual poor editorial paperback of the Bibliotheque-Charpentier series by the publisher Fasquelle is a small masterpiece; on the reverse of the flyleaf we find the label of one of the most important bookbinding workshops in Paris in the early 1900s: René Kieffer Reliures d'Art 18, Rue Seguier, Paris. René Kieffer (1876-1963) began working under the guidance of Marius-Michel, from whom he learned the technique of colored mosaic moroccans which also appears in our binding. This work therefore dates back to the beginning of his career; a great entrepreneur as well as artist, in 1909 he founded his own publishing house specializing in illustrated luxury editions embellished with his splendid bindings; having switched to a style close to Art Deco around the 1920s, his binding atelier produced more than 2000 works a year.
