Description
Complete copy of all 18 published volumes of one of the most famous collections of travel reports of the 19th century, compiled by Francesco Costantino Marmocchi, Tuscan patriot and prolific compiler of compendiums of natural history and geography. In this monumental work published by Giachetti in Prato between 1840 and 1845 Marmocchi collects travel reports on all the continents from Columbus' discovery of America to the most recent explorations in Africa and Australia. All these travel reports are illustrated by 156 tables (all the tables indicated in the indexes of the various volumes are present plus a color plate in volume 6, almost all protected by tissue paper) with landscapes, monuments, scenes of life, travel episodes, geographical maps (24) and 5 color plates of local customs and characters. There are small engraved cartoons in the text. A criterion of geographical continuity was not applied in the order of publication. 6 volumes are dedicated to South America: Narration of the Four Voyages undertaken by Christopher Columbus from 1492 to 1504 (volumes 1 -2), Report of the conquest of Peru and the Province of Cuzco written by F. Xeres of Seville (preceded by numerous reports of travels of the 16th century, volume 5), Travels, reports and memories relating to the discovery of the antiquities and history of Peru, Quito and Mexico, written by Montesinos dal Velasco and Torozomoc (volume 10), Travels, letters, reports and memories relating to the discovery and the conquest of Mexico by Francesco Hernandez and Giovanni di Grigialva, Fernando Cortes, Alva Ixtlilxochitl, Las Casas (volume 11); to these reports linked to the 16th century is added the 19th century Journey to Spanish America (Mexico, Guatemala, N. Granata, Peru, Chili, etc.) by Gabriele Lafond (volume 12). 6 volumes are dedicated to the exploration of Asia, all translations of recent European publications: Journey to China through the Atlantic, the Indian Sea, the Sunda Islands and the Philippines by Gabriele Lafond (volume 6), 3 volumes for the travels of Alessandro Burnes in India, Afghanistan, the kingdom of Bukhara and Persia (volumes 7-8-9), Journey to Syria and Palestine by Giovanni Robinson (volume 13), Travels in Arabia by JLBurckhardt (volume 15) to which is added the Journey to districts of Mesopotamia, Chaldea and Assyria by Colonel Chesney contained in volume 18. The 2 volumes of the Remembrances around the East by the Viscount of Marcellus are dedicated to the East, a category which also includes Ottoman Greece (volumes 3- 4). On Oceania 2 volumes: Journey to Polynesia and the surrounding islands of Australia (Malaysia, Moluccas, Celebes, etc.) by Gabriele Lafond (volume 14) and Travels in the interior of Australia by Major TL Mitchell (volume 16). Only one volume is dedicated to Africa with the eighteenth-century Journeys of Bernardin de Saint Pierre and Leguével to Madagascar, the Comoros Islands and the island of France (volume 17) to which however is also added the very recent Journey to Meroe in Ethiopia by Oskins , contained in volume 18. This last volume is dedicated to North America with Count FC Volney's Journey to the Northern United States of America made at the end of the 18th century.
