Additional Information

Artist: Émile Marzé (1930-2009)

Émile MARZÉ was born in Menton in 1930 to an Italian mother and a French father. He began painting at a very young age, exhibiting his first work at the age of 14. The meeting with the painters Robert and Renée Mauchant, in 1951, allowed him an initial knowledge of contemporary art. In this period he made numerous trips to Italy and Spain, discovering the greats of the Italian Renaissance, whose work he would study in depth while residing for long periods in Tuscany, especially in Florence. In 1957 he was awarded the Beckmann Prize and stayed for a certain period in Upper Bavaria, in the Murnau region and in Munich where he discovered the painting of the German Expressionists, in particular Beckmann and Nolde who would influence his painting of that period. He subsequently created the scenography for some theatrical works for the Coliseum in Barcelona. In 1961 he graduated from the Paris Biennale. From 1956 to 1977 he actively participated in the works of the Menton Biennial, an event that, under his direction, would assume an international importance, with the participation of the greatest artists of the time. He continued his work as a painter incessantly, exhibiting in the most important European and non-European galleries, attracting considerable interest from the most qualified critics. Important for the results of his research was his long partnership with Sutherland, who would leave him his personal press for printing engravings. With this press Marzé would create a series of works admirable for their refinement and originality. In the following years Émile, after the bitter disappointment due to the loss of the direction of the Biennial, closed himself more and more in himself, in a conscious form of self-isolation that in painting translated into the adoption of recurring symbols, in a circular conception of time. But, behind the refusal of apparent reality, he captures the essence of things, immersing himself in a timeless space where the pictorial gesture takes on a moral value, as well as an aesthetic one, thus becoming everyone's gesture. Marzé died in 2009.
