Acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Signed and dated lower center. Hsiao Chin, an artist of Taiwanese origin who lived and worked for a long time in Milan, conceived art as a path of growth and knowledge, a spiritual journey through time and space, which goes beyond any geographical and cultural limit. In his works, the spiritual practices of the East are perfectly combined with the artistic experiments of the West, which he knew from his long stays in various countries around the world. On the one hand, his paintings can make you think of a written page in which the artist appeals to Eastern symbolism, creating a message made of subtle signs, almost ideograms, alternating with geometric shapes evoking ancestral and shared meanings (circles, squares, spirals...); on the other hand, the bold chromatic choices, full of energy, and the brush strokes, sometimes frenetic and sparkling, sometimes more liquid and calibrated, appear "Western". The artist has said of himself: “Today the question of whether my art is Chinese or global is no longer important to me. I try to go beyond these boundaries, with the aim of creating new works that are not conditioned by techniques and ideas.” (Hsiao Chin, 2016). The work presented here, dated 1962, belongs to the period spent by Hsiao Chin in Europe first and then in New York, in which he came into contact with all the new currents of abstraction, which determined in his painting “a new course”, in which the approach to American minimalism and hard edge painting is evident (painting with "sharp contrasts", or a pictorial style characterized by sharp and sharp contrasts between different areas of color, which can be simple geometric shapes or straight lines. The color of each area is predominantly homogeneous and monochrome). The work is presented in a frame. The work comes from a private collection in Milan, which documents the family's direct contact with the artist through a series of photographic images in his company (copies attached).

Additional Information
Artist: Hsiao Chin (1935-2023)
Hsiao Chin was born in Shanghai in 1935, but moved to Taiwan when he was still young, where he studied art and began his pictorial training, which due to his very lively and curious temperament, capable of easily assimilating and experimenting with great cognitive will, led him to approach the avant-garde current of Fauvism. In 1951, martial law was introduced in Taiwan to direct the people towards anti-communism, which also banned the arts, considered a dangerous subversive tool for their avant-garde experimentation. The country was governed by a rigid totalitarian regime and artists who did not represent realistic and traditional subjects were viewed with suspicion; even some colors were considered subversive: red (communism), black (death), gray (depression). Hsiao decided to go against the rules and on December 31, 1955, together with his colleagues, he formed the first abstract group in China, Ton Fan. In the meantime he obtained a scholarship from the Franco government to further his studies and in 1956 he moved to Barcelona. He then began his rise in the world of European art, exhibiting in various cities and at the most renowned exhibitions; in 1962 he moved to New York, but in 1975 he returned to Italy, settling in Milan, from where he organized personal exhibitions throughout Italy and abroad and founded the group Surya (1977-1979), in Sanskrit Sun, which sought in line and color the possibility of art to describe the moment of creation, giving maximum recognition to the Creator. In 1989 he founded the Shakti Movement in Copenhagen, in Sanskrit Energy, which intended to channel the energy contained in the universe and nature into creation. Hsiao Chin lived and worked for a long time in Milan: in the last years of his life he continued to produce works, faithful to his intent of art as communication and rediscovery of pre-existing energies. He died in Milan in 2023.Age: Contemporary

Technical specification: Mixed Technique
