Siamo nel bel mezzo del Medioevo, in quel secolo X quando, sfaldatosi in Occidente l'impero fondato da Carlo Magno, ha inizio un regno d'Italia conteso senza esclusione di colpi dai potenti delle regioni settentrionali con l'appoggio, o l'ostilità, dei sovrani tedeschi e del papa. Liutprando, rampollo di una famiglia di rilievo, nasce a Pavia - capitale del regno verso il 920, vi viene educato, entra sin da bambino a corte cantando nel coro, diviene diacono, viene inviato da Berengario in ambasceria a Costantinopoli. Un contrasto violento con il sovrano lo costringe a riparare presso Ottone I, re di Germania e futuro imperatore, del quale sarà spesso emissario importante. Alla corte di questi, nel 956, l'inviato del califfo di Cordova, Recemundo vescovo di Elvira, esorta Liutprando a comporre un'opera di carattere storiografico. Nasce, allora, l'Antapodosis in sei libri: i primi tre narrano vicende delle quali l'autore ha appreso da altri, gli ultimi di eventi dei quali è stato testimone diretto. È la storia intricata dei "fatti degli imperatori e dei re" di mezza Europa, di forti condottieri e di principi "smidollati" ed "effeminati", e s'intitola Antapodosis perché l'autore l'intende come una "ritorsione", una sorta di vendetta, contro Berengario e la moglie Guilla per quel che essi hanno fatto a lui.
