Definition of Sculpture
Sculpture is a form of art in the truest sense of the word, created by carving and modelling materials of various kinds.
The main feature that distinguishes painting from sculpture (Marble, Wood, Terracotta, Wax, Porcelain, Clay) is dimensionality.
While painting is two-dimensional, sculpture in the round is represented in three dimensions.
There are three main techniques for making a sculpture:
1. Carving: hard materials are worked and, to carve the sculpture, sharp tools (e.g., chisels) are used.
2. Modelling: sculptures are shaped freehand using tools such as spatulas, loop tools, etc. Additional material is added to the initial sculpture to refine the details.
3. Casting: you start by creating a wax maquette, then cover this model with reinforced clay to prevent it from breaking during firing. At this point, insert small channels so that, during firing, the bronze can flow in and the wax can flow out. The clay becomes terracotta, and we have our bronze sculpture.
History of Ancient Sculpture
Ancient sculpture has always served to transmit the values of ancient art to new generations, thanks to its ability to remain intact over time.
Western sculpture has followed a very uneven course over the centuries, with particular influences from classical canons.
In antiquity, the stylization of the figure prevailed in sculpture in the round, especially the human figure, until Greek culture achieved a balance between realism and idealization.
Under the Roman Empire, the Greek model of classical sculpture remained largely unchanged.
During the Middle Ages, sculptors sought to interpret sculpture as a revealer of emotions, unlike the Renaissance, which eventually restored the classical canons.
In the nineteenth century, ancient sculpture followed broader artistic developments, moving away from classical sculpture and absorbing currents of abstraction.
