Fuller's Spiral Slide Rule

OGANOG0106011
Fuller's Cylindrical Slide Rule London England Early 20th Century

Fuller's Spiral Slide Rule

Fuller's cylindrical slide rule. It consists of an outer wooden cylinder that slides up and down and rotates, covered with paper marked with a graduated spiral logarithmic scale; inside is a longer wooden cylinder, also covered with paper marked with decimal tables. A brass index is screwed to the top of the neck, a second, longer brass index is screwed to the mahogany base and marked with a scale. The outer sliding cylinder is marked near the top: “FULLERS SPIRAL SLIDE RULE”; at the bottom it's marked: “ENTD. STATS. HALL / STANLEY, Maker, LONDON". The upper part of the long brass index is engraved: 1791 (/) 1903, for which it can be assumed (as for another similar specimen, preserved at the National Museum of American History) that the first is the serial number, while the second the year of completion. George Fuller, professor of civil engineering at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland, patented this instrument in 1878; the Stanley firm produced about 14,000 Fuller spiral slide rules in nearly a hundred years.

Musical Instrument Definition

What is a Musical Instrument? It is an object that, by virtue of its construction, produces sounds which, following a melody, compose “music.”
In antiquity, instruments were used to create the right atmosphere for rites or ceremonies.
Over time, instruments changed shape and followed society’s evolution, precisely because music aimed to entertain, delight, and ride the wave of innovation.

What types of instruments exist?

  1. Bowed string instruments: instruments in which the strings are set in motion by a bow strung with a bundle of horsehair. Although sizes vary, all string instruments share the same overall form and parts.

  2. Wind instruments: instruments in which vibrating air produces the sound.

  3. Percussion instruments: musical instruments that produce sound by rubbing or striking the shells with sticks (or by hand).

  4. Keyboard instruments: instruments that produce sounds via keys/levers pressed by the fingers (for example, accordions).

What is a scientific instrument?

As the name suggests, a Scientific Instrument is used in science to measure and acquire specific data. Among the broad range of scientific instruments, the most common are measuring and observation tools (such as a Level Square, Proportional Compass, Graphometer, Theodolite, Microscope, etc.). To classify a tool as scientific, its reliability must be verified: it should be as precise as possible in measurements and deliver near-perfect results.
