Description

Charming composition of a certain attribution, confirmed by our experts. The subject is part of the 'giorgionesque' compositions by Pietro Della Vecchia, a multifaceted and well-known Venetian painter, so much appreciated that he was decorated with the title of 'pitor ducal'. Born in Vicenza, his education develops around the figures of Padovanino and Carlo Saraceni, capturing the atmospheres and echoes of the great masters' painting of the 16th Century, so much so that Boschini called him 'simia de Zorzon'. The influence of Caravaggio and the clear and dark colors of Langetti and other great masters encountered in his Roman experience or Venice are not excluded. All these elements were reinterpreted by Della Vecchia in an absolutely original and personal way, using a bright colored painting but far from the results of the Venetian colorism, with quick and definite brush strokes. He was interested in philosophy, magic, mathematics, anatomy and optics, so as to form his own academy. The artwork is part of the great production that Della Vecchia developed from the fourth decade of the 16th Century in imitation of the works of the great protagonists of the 16th Century, and in particular Giorgione. Howerver, as Boschini noted in his comment (1660 edition), 'these imitations are not copies, but abstracts of his intellect', that is, original and autonomous creations, as demonstrated, for example, by the bold close-up construction that simply wants to recall the intellectual neo-Platonic atmosphere of the author, as interpreted in the 17th century. The development is then masterfully solved with wide and fast strokes, in the autonomous and ready style of Pietro Della Vecchia. The oil painting has been restored. It has losses and breakages of the canvas, and some integrations. The painting comes from a private collection, and was proposed in the 'Old Paintings' Cambi auction catalog of October 29th, 2013, but it was withdrawn before being beaten for property disputes, now definitively resolved.
