Il volume prende in esame la storia delle vie commerciali per l'oriente e del controllo che sul traffico dei tessuti serici cercarono di esercitare le grandi potenze commerciali d'occidente Tre le sezioni del catalogo: la prima, storica e geografica, fa riferimento all'opera e alla funzione di viaggiatori, mercanti e missionari e presenta reperti, essenzialmente artistici, provenienti da siti che fiorirono lungo i tracciati della grande via carovaniera: da Dunhuang a Samarcanda. La seconda sezione espone preziosi e rarissimi tessuti cronologicamente compresi fra il V e il XV secolo, mettendone in evidenza i motivi decorativi zoomorfi. La terza sezione indaga l'aspetto economico legato alla produzione e commercializzazione dei prodotti serici, esponendo esempi di abiti e tessuti serici cinesi e giapponesi dal XVII al XIX secolo.
