Description : Pentimento di San Pietro
Oil on canvas. Italian school. The saint, recognizable by the physiognomic features traditionally attributed to him (an elderly man with a thick white beard), is depicted, at the edge of a wood, in a heartfelt prayer, kneeling with his hands folded and a tearful and repentant gaze turned up; in the background, on the right, the walls of the city of Jerusalem. The scene can be traced back to the Gospel episode of the saint's repentance following his denial of Jesus, which the Gospel recounts with the words "he went out and wept bitterly". The pathos of the character emerges, whose face, although distorted by pain, is however illuminated by the light that comes from above, a symbol of the divine presence. The restored and relined piece is presented in a frame in style.
