Description

Anastatic reproduction in 500 copies (ours is no. 35) of the two volumes of the Visconti Book of Hours. This masterpiece, which is part of the tradition of illuminated private devotional books typical of the time, was commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti to write the text to the amanuensis Friar Amadeo and for the miniatures to Giovannino de' Grassi who edited the first part of the 'Opera. The work was interrupted in 1402 upon the death of Gian Galeazzo. When his son Filippo Maria became duke in 1412, the codex was completed by the illuminator Belbello da Pavia. The two volumes, considered one of the masterpieces of Lombard illumination, are illustrated by 34 splendid full-page miniatures and 90 historiated initials. The anastatic reproduction is accompanied by two volumes of Commentary: the first, edited by Milvia Bollati, collects studies on Lombard illumination; the second, edited by Adriana Di Domenico, describes the codex sheet by sheet from an iconographic and historical-artistic point of view.
