Additional Information

Artist: Enrico (Henry) Coleman (1846-1911)

Born in Rome in 1846 to an English father, the landscape painter Charles Coleman, Henry inherited from him an interest in landscape painting and became a frequent visitor to the countryside around Rome, a favorite subject of his paintings. He also paid particular attention to portraying lively scenes of running animals. Coleman portrayed, mainly in watercolour, the desolate expanses of the Roman countryside in paintings with a prevalence of horizontal lines, or the most diverse herbaceous species and, in particular, orchids in "enlargements" executed with refined and minute lines. His passion for this flower was famous, of which he became an excellent grower. A methodical man, he divided his interests between painting, hunting and mountaineering: he was, in fact, among the first frequenters of the Italian Alpine Club, which in 1907 appointed him a meritorious member. His fidelity to the theme of nature, pursued throughout his life, induced the artists who in 1904 created the "XXV della Campagna Romana" group to assign him the presidency of the association: that is, he became its "head". His participation in the major Italian exhibitions was constant. He retained his British nationality throughout his life, but, not fond of travel, he never got to know his family's homeland. Henry Coleman died in Rome on 4 February 1911.
