Description
A splendid edition illustrated by Mimmo Paladino of what is considered the oldest treatise on bibliophilia, the work of Richard de Bury (1287-1354), ambassador to the papal court in Avignon, where he met Petrarch. He was also chancellor to King Edward III, bishop of Durham, and a forerunner of the humanists, a keen hunter of ancient manuscripts. He also owned a large library, which he illustrated in his Philobiblon, a work that was widely circulated even in manuscript form (45 codices are known) and was first printed in Cologne in 1473. Franco Sciardelli offers us a precious edition in the version by Francesco Tissoni, with an introduction by Gianmarco Gaspari and an original drypoint on the frontispiece signed in pencil, as well as 60 woodcuts by Mimmo Paladino. The colophon provides the justification for the edition: This edition is illustrated with an original engraving by Mimmo Paladino and sixty woodcuts specially designed by the artist and carved on end grain wood by Adriano Porazzi. The total print run is 125 copies, of which 100 are marked with Arabic numerals, twenty with Roman numerals, and five are personal. The text was set in Baskerville type and printed by Ruggero Olivieri on Alcantara paper with the artist's watermark, manufactured in Tino by Cartiera Sicars. The binding was done by Giovanni De Stefanis. The drypoint engraving was hand-pressed by Franco Sciardelli on Japan paper. Our copy is no. 74.
