Description
The volume edited by Francesco Vigilio Barbacovi and published in 1788 represents a point of reference for eighteenth-century legal reform in Trentino. Commissioned by Prince-Bishop Pietro Vigilio, the code aimed to modernize and rationalize the Principality's judicial system, responding to the requests of Emperor Joseph II. The code is distinguished by its use of clear technical-legal language, aimed at making the administration of justice more efficient and expeditious and reducing the number of disputes as much as possible. Barbacovi drew inspiration from Austrian and Prussian legal reforms, integrating them with local Trentino tradition and elements of Roman law. The code remained in force until 1807, when it was replaced by the Austrian judicial regulation.
