Work in two volumes. Linen bindings with gilt titles and fillets on the spines, silver titles and illustrations on the front covers: creased covers and peeling at the corners. The binding of the first volume is partially detached with minimal scratches on the covers. On the back cover of the second volume we find a pocket inside which there is a folded map entitled "Carta Generale che mostra le Esplorazioni ei rilievi della spedizione 1907-1909" and another folded map showing the illustrative panorama of the journey and the mountains. Irregular side and bottom edges with traces of dust, well-trimmed head edges, gilded with traces of dust. The two volumes are both placed inside their own cardboard cases. The cases are rather worn, with paper tags bearing the following warning: "The volume will not be accepted for return if missing its cardboard case". On the cover of the first volume, signature on the front cover. Well-preserved cards with rare foxing and wide side margins; foxing is slightly more widespread in the second volume. The color plates and the illustrated frontispieces are protected by sheets of tissue paper. Text in Italian.

Description

First Italian edition of the account of Ernest Shackleton's 1907-1909 expedition to the South Pole, published in London with the title The Heart of the Antarctic in 1909. An epic undertaking that began with the landing on Ross Island in January 1908, the climbing of Mount Erebus and the reaching of 88.33 South Latitude on 9 January 1909, about 200 km from the Pole; on the return journey, Shackleton and his four companions walked 2300 km in the freezing Antarctic. The account of the expedition with Shackleton's diary is followed by chapters dedicated to scientific observations. The text is accompanied by 11 colour plates, 275 black and white plates, engravings in the text and two enclosed folded maps. Of the 12 colour plates planned for our copy, only one is missing, namely The Aurora Australis (page 250) in the first volume.
