Plato and Aristotle

Mixed media on canvas. Signature, title, date and dedication on the reverse. Paolo Baratella, a recently deceased artist from Ferrara, developed his art by composing vast pictorial cycles inspired by contemporary subjects; we therefore have series of works by him gathered under significant titles. From the mid-1980s and into the 2000s, his scenographic apparatuses became more enriched with cultural, pictorial and literal iconographic references. In particular, Baratella pays greater attention to the iconography of art, philosophy and history. In this work the artist presents the portraits of the two great Greek philosophers (taken from their traditional classical depictions) and shades them in a frame of pink-blue colours. The two individual canvases are placed side by side inside a worked wooden frame, on whose two horizontal crosspieces the words "Timaeus" a work written by Plato, and "Ethics", a recurring theme of Aristotelian philosophy, are engraved.

Torrefazione Caffè Pernigotti, 1924

Color lithograph. Signed and dated 1924 top right. Printed by the printer Barabino & Graeve of Genoa. This is an advertising poster for the well-known Pernigotti company of Novi Ligure, today renowned above all for the famous Gianduiotti chocolates, but which began with the production of various confectionery and similar products. Ettore Mazzini, a Genoese portrait and landscape painter, also created various advertising illustrations for important Ligurian companies (we recall the poster for the naval, thermal, electrical and mechanical constructions of the Ansaldo group of Genoa). The poster presented is in good condition, with humidity stains and a cut in the paper. Framed.

Interior with Figures and Animals, 1917

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. In Giuseppe Solenghi's extensive production, rich in lyricism expressed with delicate and refined tones and strokes, the urban landscapes of Milan or the Venetian lagoon views prevail, but there are also several glimpses of the countryside, mainly Lombardy, as well as rustic interiors. In this work the artist portrays the interior of a peasant house, where humans and animals coexist: the scene is pervaded by a serene atmosphere of family everyday life, in which the warm light of the sun filtering through the open door creates plays of light and shadow on the earth tones of the interior. The painting is presented in a mid-20th century frame.

Landscape with Figures

Mixed media on cardboard. Signed lower left. Stamp of the artist's studio on the back. The painter of Apulian origins Giuseppe Casciaro, painter and teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples where he trained, was essentially a landscape painter and produced in particular views of the surroundings of Naples, Irpinia (Nusco) and Puglia. He preferred the pastel painting technique in which he excelled. Here is a glimpse of a Mediterranean countryside, crossed by a path with wayfarers. It is presented in a period frame.

In a wide valley under sharp mountain peaks, a small lake opens up, on which some houses overlook and boats sail; some common people's figures are busy with daily activities. Pleasant and serene in the green-blue hues of nature. It is presented in a period frame.

Allegory

Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. The large painting features two figures: on the right a man sitting at a table, dressed in a red dressing gown, with a sad and concentrated expression, playing with his hands with some disheveled flowers, coming from the composition on his head; on the left standing the Christ of the Passion, crowned with thorns, with a gray cloak on his shoulders. Behind the seated man, a leaden sky in which, however, a ray of light opens. The painting probably wants to allegorically depict the painful and suffered end of the life of a person, who lives the same Passion as Christ, but who yearns for a new, bright life. The work is presented in a frame.

Sweetness and tenderness shine through these two embraced figures, similar in facial features and expression, composed in their elegant and lively clothes, with the background of a floral wallpaper. Winter landscape

Pastels on paper applied to canvas. Signed lower left. The large landscape is completely dominated by the play of colour: divided into two hemifields given by the sky and the earth (a mountainous land where sporadic fir trees sprout), it sees the pinkish blue of the sky prevail above, under the greenish blue of the snow on the ground , two shades of the same color range that then meet in the skyline of the mountains. Cinotti was a landscape painter who was an exponent of Italian Divisionism, whose painting is characterized by a material and pasty application with touches of spatulated color. In coeval frame.

Hierarchs 1971

Painted under glass. Signed and dated top right. On the back label of "Galleria Pietra, Arte contemporanea internazionale" of Milan, with the title of the work. José Ciuha is considered one of the most important contemporary Slovenian artists. His artistic production has used very different techniques, from watercolour to mosaic, to tapestry, and in particular he has used - as in this work - the technique of fixing under glass. It has been said that Ciuha's works pass "from the phantasmatic to the metamorphic, in a reverie of lucid figurative allegories", in a continuous osmosis between abstract and figurative. The Ancient Triskelion 1997

Driven by an intense intellectual curiosity that has characterized every moment of his experience, not only creative, but also human and professional, the Ancona artist Giorgio Villa has developed his own principles of thought and action, on rigorous bases of a scientific-mathematical approach, nourished by a profound poetic inspiration and a deep-rooted sense of beauty.
