L'inizio della filosofia occidentale consiste nella domanda dei primi pensatori greci sul fondamento originario del Tutto che essi riconoscono come Dio o come il Divino. La metafisica classica approda con Dio all'elemento primo e supremo che nel pensiero della tarda antichità è considerato come l'Uno originario. Il pensiero cristiano è più che mai guidato, dalle sue origini fino al Medioevo, dall'idea di Dio che viene giustificata razionalmente e sviluppata. Anche i più grandi pensatori della modernità hanno riconosciuto alla loro maniera Dio, facendone addirittura il fondamento e il contenuto principale della loro filosofia. Nel mondo moderno "si" vive e "si" pensa come se Dio non ci fosse. E tuttavia il presente non può essere contrassegnato come "epoca del nichilismo", soprattutto se si getta lo sguardo, oltre i limiti dello spazio culturale dell'Occidente, al mondo intero. La fede religiosa possiede in tutte le religioni del mondo una potenza significativa che, nuovamente risvegliata, può divenire nelle sue forme estreme addirittura minacciosa. A maggior ragione la questione di Dio deve essere filosoficamente ripensata e illuminata a partire dalla sua storia.

In 1973 a workshop was held at The University of Western Ontario on topics of common interest to philosophers and linguists. This volume con tains most of the papers presented at the workshop. Also included are previously unpublished essays by R. Dougherty and H. Lasnik as well as a comment on G. Lakoff's paper by B. van Fraassen. K. Donnellan's paper was presented at the workshop and subsequently appeared in The Philosophical Review. We thank the editors of this journal for permission to publish the paper here. The papers by D. THE EDITORS DAVID LEWIS COUNTERFACTUALS AND COMPARATIVE POSSIBILITY* In the last dozen years or so, our understanding of modality has been much improved by means of possible-world semantics: the project of analyzing modal language by systematically specifying the conditions under which a modal sentence is true at a possible world. I hope to do the same for counterfactual conditionals. I write A 0-C for the counter factual conditional with antecedent A and consequent C. It may be read as 'H it were the case that A, then it would be the case that C' or some more idiomatic paraphrase thereof.

L'etica normativa è la parte centrale dell'etica, quella che sta in mezzo, fra l'etica applicata e la metaetica, e che cerca di sviluppare e giustificare i principi dell'agire morale. Nonostante la sua centralità, importanza ed attualità anche nell'ambito politico, l'etica normativa in Italia ha trovato poca attenzione nella discussione accademica. Per queste ragioni questo libro si propone di stimolare tale discussione, fornendo un panorama dell'etica normativa attualmente rappresentata in Italia. A tale scopo include saggi di docenti che insegnano filosofia morale in varie università italiane e che in tali contributi espongono i principi delle loro proprie etiche normative. Gli autori sono: Francesco Allegri, Luisella Battaglia, Sergio Cremaschi, Vanna Gessa Kurotschka, Christoph Lumer, Maria Moneti Codignola, Furio Semerari, Stefano Semplici e Isabel Trujillo. Lo spettro delle posizioni proposte, tutte originali, si estende dall'etica neoaristotelica fino alle etiche del benessere.

Fundamental problems of the uses of formal techniques and of natural and instrumental practices have been raised again and again these past two decades, in many quarters and from varying viewpoints. We have brought a number of quite basic studies of these issues together in this volume, not linked con ceptually nor by any rigorously defined problematic, but rather simply some of the most interesting and even provocative of recent research accomplish ments. Most of these papers are derived from the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science during 1973-80, the two exceptions being those of Karel Berka (on scales of measurement) and A. A. Zinov'ev (on a non-tradi tional theory of quantifiers). Just how intriguing these results (or conjectures?) seem to us may be seen from some brief quotations: (1) Judson Webb: " . . . . the abstract machine concept has many of the appropriate kinds of properties for modelling living, reproducing, rule following, self-reflecting, accident-prone, and lucky creatures . . . the a priori logical results relevant to the abstract machine concept, above all Godel's, could not conceivably have turned out any better for the mechanist. " (2) M. L. Dalla Chiara: " . . . modal interpretation (of quantum logic) shows clearly that it possesses a logical meaning which is quite independent of quantum mechanics. " (3) Isaac Levi: (as against Peirce and Popper) " . . . infallibilism is con sistent with corrigibilism, and a view which respects avoidance of error is an important desideratum for science.
