Furniture by Architects reveals how the same fundamental principles used in building design can be applied on a much smaller scale, resulting in pieces of furniture that embrace function, beauty and context to become objects of art. For centuries, architects have turned their hand to custom furniture in a practice that has resulted in a number of iconic designs, including the timeless Eames Lounge and Ottoman and the ubiquitous Barcelona chair created by Mies van der Rohe for his acclaimed Barcelona Pavilion.

Furniture by Architects beautifully illustrates bespoke design by some of the world's leading architects, who are increasingly designing furniture as clients seek interiors customised to specific needs. Foster Partners' 520 Armchair for Walter Knoll has the texture and comfort found in a traditional leather armchair, while the Liquid Glacial Dining & Coffee Table by Zaha Hadid Design, made from polished clear Plexiglas, capture the spirit of her architecture, with their distinctive fluid lines, revealing the waves and ripples below the surface.

Il talento, in molti casi, ha bisogno di tempo per maturare e manifestarsi. Così è accaduto a Cleto Munari. Non ama l'Università. Non gli interessa neppure scegliere una Facoltà che si suppone possa essergli congeniale: Architettura. Sa che non vuole costruire case o ponti. Sente che la sua immaginazione non coltiva visioni che possano dispiegarsi nella durata; istintivamente avverte che il sentimento della bellezza, che sin dalla nascita gli si è depositato dentro, ha bisogno di più urgenti e immediati campi di prova. La bellezza, dunque: come progetto, come ricerca ed espressione di quella verità che può trovarsi solo fuori da ogni canone, da ogni accademismo. Interrompe gli studi e consegna la propria formazione alla più eccentrica e personale Università che si possa concepire. Si rende conto che il mondo è pieno d'arte e pieno di "laboratori" dove gli artisti operano sulla materia viva di ciò che, resistendo al tempo, confluisce nei libri e nelle aule universitarie. Compone una visionaria, ma puntigliosamente reale, "geografia dell'estetica" e in questo atlante, che ha carattere internazionale, si muove: teatri, gallerie, musei, studi di artisti, centri di sperimentazioni.
