Additional Information
Artist: Carmelo Cappello (1912-1996)
Carmelo Cappello was born in Ragusa in 1912. After attending the Comiso School of Art, he moved to Rome in 1928, where he worked in Ettorre Colla's studio. Two years later, he moved to Milan and attended evening classes at the Sforza Castle. In 1937, he began producing sculptures, befriending Giò Ponti. Cappello participated in the Venice Biennale in 1940, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1954, and 1958. He exhibited at the Rome Quadrennial in 1933, 1943, 1947, 1955, 1965, 1973, and 1986, and at the Milan Triennale in 1951, 1954, and 1957. In 1977, he participated in Cooperarte, a cooperative of artists exploring new forms of expression in relation to the public. Following an initial phase of figurative production, he was influenced by Tatlin's Russian Constructivism, which he translated into a personal style focused on volumes and linear rhythms, evident in both his painting and sculpture. Cappello died in Milan in 1996.Age: Contemporary
