Writing desks are versatile pieces of furniture. Their history begins in the Middle Ages. The term originally referred to the room where monks would work on rewriting ancient manuscripts. At the same time, the word Acriptorium was also used to refer to the piece of furniture where monks did their writing. Over time, especially after the invention of the printing press, the term came to refer only to the room. A room where the lord of the house could dedicate time to reading and studying his private book collection or managing his affairs. A private study within the home. It was a small room that included a writing desk where one could place documents and manuscripts. In this room, alongside the antique writing desk, there were also small bookcases and shelves to store items out of sight, like letters. These were hidden in the secret compartments of the writing desks. Even today, the modern writing desk can be compared to a small desk with drawers where items can be stored. It's a piece of furniture that fits easily into any room and meets various needs. The writing desk can be used as a workspace, study area, reading corner, or simply as a utility piece to place objects. Materials, colours, styles, shapes, and lines make each writing desk unique. In our catalogue, you can find dozens of antique, mid-century, and designer writing desks. Don’t forget that all the desks listed in our catalogue are also available for rental.

Antique writing desks

The antique writing desk has always been a versatile piece of furniture. It can be used for writing, working, drawing, reading, or storing all kinds of objects thanks to its compartments. Even if few people today still write letters by hand, the antique writing desk can still be incredibly useful. It can be reimagined as a workspace or study station. A classic wooden writing desk can give a room an old-fashioned atmosphere, taking us back to the time when everything was written by hand. Nowadays, the writing desk supports a computer instead of ink and inkwell. This is an inevitable transformation that fascinatingly brings together very different eras. You can choose from different types of writing desks, such as:

  • - Wooden Writing Desk
  • - Desk with Upper Shelf
  • - Styled Writing Desk
  • - Neoclassical Desk
  • - Writing Desk with Drawers
  • - Restoration Period Desk
  • - Writing Desk with Drop Front

You can find Baroque, Classic, Venetian, French writing desks with inlays and golden details. All highly versatile, and when paired with the right rug and armchair, they can transform the room. You can turn a small corner of the space into the perfect home office. Placing the writing desk near a window gives you perfect light for reading your favourite books. Choosing the right classic writing desk and creating the right atmosphere can make studying more enjoyable and encourage your children to concentrate. The uses of a writing desk are truly endless.
