Il volume si inserisce in un ampio progetto internazionale denominato "Between mechanics and architecture" dedicato ai rapporti tra architettura e meccanica. I due saggi qui raccolti, "Chambre H. Per una storia del costruire" di Antonio Becchi e "Sulla teoria dell'arco murario. Una rilettura storico-critica" di Federico Foce, esaminano alcuni aspetti della storia delle costruzione voltata in muratura e prendono in considerazione testi ormai celebri e altri del tutto ignorati, nell'intento di offrire revisioni critiche e nuove chiavi di lettura per i problemi connessi alla meccanica degli archi e al rapporto tra meccanica e stereotomia.

L'epoca coloniale, quella tra XIX e XX secolo, oltre le sue ipocrisie civilizzatrici, ha messo in luce, paradossalmente, un'apertura di credito verso le culture "altre", che hanno finito per affascinare e influenzare l'Occidente, assai più, forse, di quanto i colonizzatori non abbiano potuto fare coi colonizzati. Il fascino dell'Oriente, sulla scorta anche delle Esposizioni universali, lasciò un segno decisivo sulla cultura francese a cavallo tra i due secoli. I tre saggi sul "genio giapponese" di Henri Focillon, qui tradotti per la prima volta e riuniti in volume, ne sono una eloquente testimonianza. Focillon comincia a dar forma definitiva al suo "marchio intellettuale", messo poi a frutto da allievi d'eccellenza (da Jurgis Baltrusaitis ad André Chastel, fino a George Kubler), che consiste nell'individuazione dei caratteri di uno "stile" affrancato dagli schematismi geografico-cronologici (l'idea di struttura mobile riferita a spazio, materia, spirito e tempo che Focillon svilupperà come teoria dell'arte nel libro "Vita delle forme"). Nel "Saggio sul genio giapponese" Focillon sfonda addirittura i confini della storia dell'arte delineando una sorta di utopia antropologica. Bisognava però fare i conti con una certa declinazione culturale del japonisme che aveva giocato un ruolo centrale nella cultura artistica europea... Introduzione di Andrea Beolchi.

Hailed as a landmark book when it was first published in 1984, "The Golden Age" by Bob Haak remains the seminal book on the subject of Dutch painting in the seventeenth century. Justifiably know as the Golden Age, this was one of the most intensely creative periods of artistic activity the world has ever known. Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Ruisdael, and Jan Steen are a few of the more famous great Dutch painters of this era. Bob Haak's text is a guide through all the Dutch cities and towns where painters were at work. His familiarity with the historical circumstances of their art is remarkably complete, and he understands how Dutch art forged its own pictorial style as the nation forged its independence; how, in their freedom from the patronage of the Catholic Church, Dutch patrons and artists found a new wealth of subjects to enjoy and explore, subjects close to their life yet enriched by their sense of life's pleasures and obligations.
