Alla fine del 1960 Thomas Stearns (1936-2006) giunse a Murano, con una borsa di studio del governo italiano e una Fulbright Travel Grant, per sviluppare le sue ricerche sul vetro, avviate durante gli anni della sua formazione prima alla Vemphis Academy of Art e successivamente alla prestigiosa Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI. Grazie alla notevole apertura di Ludovico de Santillana - succeduto nella direzione della vetreria a Paolo Venini dopo la sua morte (1959) -, l'artista americano poté sperimentare le potenzialità del vetro soffiato avvalendosi della straordinaria perizia di "Checco" Ongaro, unico tra i maestri che si rese disponibile alla realizzazione dei suoi progetti. Durante i due anni di permanenza alla Venini, dove dalla fine del 1961 fu assunto come guest designer, Stearns ebbe la possibilità di dedicarsi alle sue ricerche artistiche, accanto alle quali sviluppò anche serie di carattere commerciale. Egli realizzò opere estremamente originali, spesso distinguibili per le forme asimmetriche e organiche e l'impiego di colori opachi di grande matericità, generalmente accostati al vetro trasparente. Nel 1962, in occasione della XXXI triennale di Venezia, la Venini scelse di presentare anche sei pezzi dell'artista giudicati meritevoli della medaglia d'oro, che però non gli venne assegnata quando si seppe che l'autore non era italiano. Il volume illustra per la prima volta l'intera produzione vetraria di Thomas Stearns, che comprende prove, prototipi, pezzi unici, piccole serie, ma anche manufatti entrati nel catalogo della fornace. Si passa da opere come il celebre "Cappello del Doge" alle suggestive "Facciate di Venezia" per arrivare alla "Sentinella di Venezia", straordinaria scultura in vetro di grande ricchezza policroma che rappresenta l'apice della sua ricerca artistica compiuta a Murano.

- The first monograph dedicated to René Prou, a central figure of Art Deco - Contains around 400 documents and photographs René Prou (1889-1947), an ensemblier and decorator, was - alongside Ruhlmann, Leleu, Dunand, Subes and Brandt - a central figure of the Art Deco movement. Trained at Gouffé, in Paris, in the 1910s, Prou took part in most of the Salons d'Automne and the Salons des artistes décorateurs before commanding attention at the Exposition international des arts décoratifs of 1925. Firmly established by major public and private commissions, his talent as an ensemblier was expressed as much in the decoration of ocean liners - Cuba (1923), Lafayette (1928), Paris (1929) - as in the fitting out of the sleeper cars of the Orient Express; the Palace of Nations in Geneva, where he worked alongside José-Maria Sert, with whom he also collaborated at the Waldorf Astoria in New York; and the furnishing of the Mitsubishi department stores in Tokyo. His style, defined by the curve of his metal leg blended with a joyous ornamentation, rejuvenated and lightened the full and massive forms of Art Deco while preserving harmony, comfort and a certain idea of simple luxury. Director of the École de l'Union centrale des arts décoratifs, in Paris, in 1946, his influence marked many postwar talents, including Jean Royère. Text in English and French.
