Description
The volume collects four works of Roman history, published by Filippo Giunti, founder of the Florentine branch of the family, in the year of his death, 1517. The publication fits perfectly into the editorial line of the Giunti typography, which gave ample space to classical literature, especially Latin, printed in the italic character taken from the example of the Aldine character engraved by Grifo; the use of the character gave rise to a long dispute with Manutius, an echo of which we find in the dedication of our volume to Leo X, who, after having granted Manutius the privilege for printing in italics in 1513, the following year retracted the decision, accepting the appeal of the Florentine ambassador (not for nothing was he a Medici). On the last page appears the typographical device of Filippo Giunti, the lily supported by two putti, used for the first time in 1512. The works included in the volume cover the history of Rome, of imperial Rome in particular in the first two works: Herodiani Historiae Libri VIII, from Marcus Aurelius to Gordian III, presented in the Latin translation by Poliziano, published for the first time in 1493 with a dedication to Pope Innocent VIII; De vita et moribus Imperatorum Romanorum, excerpta ex libris Sexti Aurelii Victoris, a Caesare Augusto usque ad Theodosium Imperatorem, epitome of Aurelius from Augustus to Theodosius; Eutropii De gestis Romanorum Libri X; Pauli Diaconi De Gestis Romanorum Libri VIII, which continue the work of Eutropius. The text lacks the woodcut or miniature capital letters: in the space the guide letters
