Description

The scholar Remigio Nannini (1521-1581), who entered the Dominican order in 1575, is known under the name Remigio Fiorentino. He edited numerous editions and translations for the Giolito de' Ferrari family. The subtitle reads: "... with the Arguments for each Oration, for a greater understanding of what is contained therein, and with the Effects that followed from said Orations. In which, in addition to knowledge of the History, one has information on the governments of States and Republics, on the accusing and defending of criminals, and on many other things useful to anyone who attends to civil life." This volume represents a significant anthology of orations taken from Greek, Latin, and Italian historians, translated into Italian and commented by the author. It includes a preface and an index of authors, including Dio, Xenophon, Quintus Curtius, Leonardo Aretinus, Poggio Fiorentino, Livy, and others. This collection is part of a 16th-century editorial trend that aimed to make ancient oratory and legal practices accessible to the public, using the vernacular to facilitate understanding.
