Nella primavera del 1985, Federico Zeri tenne, presso l'Università Cattolica di Milano, cinque lezioni su "l'arte di leggere l'arte": che cosa ci dice un'opera d'arte; che cosa significa e che cosa rappresenta come testimonianza della civiltà e della cultura che l'hanno prodotta; quale preparazione storico-culturale è necessaria per la sua comprensione. "Non avrei molti dubbi", scrisse Renzo Zorzi, "nel ritenere le cinque lezioni l'evento culturale più importante della primavera milanese, che sarà ricordato dal pubblico di studenti, ma anche di storici dell'arte, critici, funzionari di musei, insegnanti, collezionisti, che le hanno seguite con un'attenzione e una partecipazione di cui gli scroscianti applausi conclusivi non bastano forse a rivelare il senso e l'intensità".
